The BBC has posted an article about missing episodes being returned.  They don't get into specifics, but it adds an air of credibility to the story.

BBC to reveal a number of missing Doctor Who episodes

Then again more reports say including -

"More than 100 episodes from the 1960s featuring the first two actors to play the Time Lord, William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton, were either destroyed or suffered from poor storage in the BBC's videotape and film libraries.

However, weekend reports that 100 episodes had been discovered in Ethiopia are said to be wide of the mark."

Then again even one episode thought lost/wiped is worth all the excitement!

That guy needs to lay off the caffeine and sugar, and get a nice big dose of Thorazine in his butt.

Apart from judging the man did he have anything interesting to report? I think he did!

Maybe the BBC decided to sit on the lost episodes for three years and release them as a surprise for the 50th? Doesn't seem like a bad idea to me....or particularly sinister.

Why not just have patience?

I really have to think that if something like Tenth Planet 4 was returned, and they knew about it, they would have put the brakes on the animated release. Especially since they were planning that DVD release around the same time as the anniversary, and the lost episode announcement would have been held for an anniversary surprise as well. They'd really look silly in that case, and probably gave to face angry customers demanding refunds on 10th Planet DVDs!

I'd love to be proven wrong though!

I think the 200 episodes found could still be true...but all of those 200 may not have been missing.

Deborah Watling and Frazier Hines will be involved in the announcement of the lost episodes.  This makes it sound like the episodes might be from the Patrick Troughton era.

Steve Manfred reports on his website that "apparently" it's "Enemy of the World" and "The Web of Fear." Any episodes recovered from these stories would be fantastic.

http://home.comcast.net/~smanfred/Latest.html

If these allegedly recovered episodes are made available for digital download "almost immediately," I wonder if there'll be a territorial lockout. What if we American fans can't legally download them?

Just what is going on? Steven Moffat, Christopher Bidmead and that bloke who wrote Kinda couldn't have come up with something this head-scratching. If the BBC has been sitting on these for some big reveal then they've mishandled/misread this badly.

Once the inevitable celebrations and joy have died down it is going to add fuel to the conspiracy theories that the Beeb is sitting on even more, but drip feeding releases to fit some wider marketing or political strategy. Not to mention the flak some people have taken because they have maintained the episodes existed, or debunked the rumours.

The BBC News coverage is the strongest evidence yet that we will see some missing episodes, and the timing so close to the actual anniversary is highly unlikely to be a coincidence.

Either way, it's a right old mess and a PR own-goal.

if the BBC say that 1 episode or 100 episodes have been returned they need to be asked

is this everything or are you not telling us the whole truth

Apparently after they announce what they have, at a future date they will announce more.

Now don't get me wrong, I love that so many people on this thread are being pragmatic about all this. But...

Personally, why should we have to wait even longer to be told exactly what has been found? I saw a comment yesterday, allegedly from a BBC insider saying, fans have waited 50 years they can wait a bit longer?

S'yeah, right. It wasn't the fans who wiped the tapes in the first place. Here in the UK the BBC is a publicly-funded organisation. I wouldn't expect a hospital to lie, mislead or make no comment, so why should I expect it from an organisation I directly pay for?

You can laugh it off and say, Rule 1. The BBC lies, but no it actually shouldn't.

And will the BBC apologise to all those who innocently tweeted denials (because they were kept in the dark too), or to those who said the rumours are true and were vilified for it? Of course, not.

I work in the media and I understand that not everything can be made public for legal and contractual reasons, but just saying that would at least be more transparent.
