Another pretty good "historical" with wonderful costumes and impressive sets. Hartnell was exceptional in this one, seemingly relishing in his impersonating a Regional Officer. A criminally underappreciated story. So pleased that animation has completed this serial.

Not quite as good as Marco Polo, but it is full of great character building moments between the Doctor meeting the chain gang as he is walking to Paris and Barbara and Susan trying to support each other in the prison. I also really loved the new animated episodes!

Having never seen any of this story until just a few weeks ago, I am impressed. I am sure if it was done today, it would have grand CGI reconstructions of 18th Century Paris. But the small street sets and tiny cells gives this story an even more desperate feel to the situations the crew is in. The gag of the Doctor and his companions just missing each other by seconds as used again with "The Romans".
The Doctor's costume....oh, I wish this had been in color!!

Have to agree with most of the above. It's no Marco Polo, but it's still a good story.

Loved the Doctor taking on the role as Regional Officer. It was a wonderful display of the Doctor's legendary confidence and courage. Definitely the highlight of this serial!

I have to say, however, that I'm not very fond of this concept of traveling somewhere and then spending the rest of the story trying to get back to the TARDIS and longing to get out of there again. It takes away the spirit of adventure, and it seems to be a continuing theme in this season (it's in An Unearthly Child, The Daleks, Marco Polo, The Aztecs, and now Reign of Terror). I hope there aren't too many more like this?

Nonetheless, it was good. The animation of episode 4 and 5 is done very nicely, too, and is certainly favoured over a mere photo reconstruction.

I gave this one three stars. A good story but not outstanding. Smile
