Red Letter Media's reviews are excellent at breaking down all the prequels' faults.
I'm suprised that some of the Snaggletooth toys were based off the Special.

I adore those reviews, but it's hard to get passed the very twisted "narrative" of the reviews plus the fact they clock in about as long as the movies themselves.

That being said, there are some great jokes ("What's wrong with your faaaaaaaaaaaace?") and like you said, excellent break downs of the faults. Especially the camera blocking. That's actually not something I noticed before the review, but I can't not notice it now. (Lucas only has two positions for the camera - in front of someone's face and over their shoulder during dialogue scenes. Back and forth, back and forth back and forth...)

And yet, I think that 70s Lucas would have done the CGI too if it was available.

Oh most definitely. It's mostly personal preference, but no matter how good the CG, it's still CG. A practical effect will always look more "real". The models in the original trilogy have a "weight" to them CG cannot - and I doubt will never be able to - match.

Coincidentally, I hated that they got rid of the Muppet Yoda for Episodes II and III, lot the least of which because they turned him into a Hyperactive Gummi Bear on Red Bull. That really does ruin Episode II for me. Yoda crushes Force Lightning in one hand? Epitome of Awesome. Then Yoda breaks out DBZ inspired combat moves? Laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame.

Yet he still needs a cane to talk with. confused

Could we steer this thread back to discussion on the Star Wars Holiday Special, please?

There are already several threads on SW for general discussion, including this one...

and this one...

That's a great site, thanks for the link.

I've only seen the special once, in a very low quality stream with horrible picture and sound.

I got a high quality DVD of this at a convention many years ago.

Still didn't make the actual program any better...

But yeah... the Boba Fett cartoon was pretty sweet. I liked the Jefferson Starship music video, too. The rest was rubbish.

I thought so even then...

Someday, Disney will release it as a special edition Blu-Ray.

That someday being a few months after George Lucas dies.

It was made on videotape so probably wont be on Blu, and I watched Phantom Menace the other day and it was sooo dull.

The Holiday Special is kinda long, but in the day it was a very special event.

I kinda wonder if the kids that went cuckoo over the prequels will look back on them in the same way as we do the holiday special Razz

The prequels were bad in a safe, boring manner. The Star War Holiday Special was bad in bizarrely interesting way. You don't need either to enjoy the original Star Wars trilogy, but I'd take the Holiday special as canon over 3 prequels if given the option.

I think perspective is needed. Those of us old enough to have seen it when it originally aired shouldn't be that hard on it. After all...back then, it was an incredibly rare opportunity to see the "Star Wars" characters on TV and for FREE yet. It certainly was exciting to watch at the time.

You know, considering all the fresh young "talent" Disney has on its roster...doesn't this generation deserve to experience the thrill of its own "Star Wars Holiday Special"? Fans should think about it. Because I'm sure some Disney execs are, so best to prepare yourselves.

Let us not forget the magic of the Saturday Night Live with Carrie Fisher on the beach singing "Obi-Wan Kenobi" or Mark Hamill appearing on The Muppet Show

PURE MAGIC! drunken

I did see it when it originally aired, and I was SO disappointed, especially by the Cantina scene. I felt cheated watching it.

I honestly felt like everything I liked about Star Wars was mocked by this cheap imitation.

Now, on the other hand, "The Making of Star Wars" (1977) was absolutely INCREDIBLE. I remember this as a kid, loved it, and watched it again recently in the Blu-Ray set; C3P0 and R2D2 in character...this was fabulous and brought back a flood of fond memories.

PS: Loved the Muppet Show Star Wars ep., up intil Chewbacca dances...lol

I totally agree that the Christmas Special was a cheesy mess, but I'd still like a full-quality, legitimate copy of it, because I'm okay with laughing at it.

I don't think it was that bad, personally. I certainly prefer the the original trilogy, no doubt at all, but the prequels really aren't that bad in my opinion.

Could it be possible that OT fans hate the prequels so much because their immensely high expectations, built by the news of BRAND NEW Star Wars films (which must've been exciting), could NEVER be met because 'Phantom Menace' was a completely different style and format than the OT? I don't think 'Phantom Menace' was a bad film, I think fans just hate it because it's simply different. Yeah, it's no 'A New Hope' but I don't think it was as bad a film as some make it out to be. Would I be right to think that OT fans are quick to criticize the prequels merely because they are different to what they expected and not because the films are overly bad?

I'm just trying to get some perspective here. I think I'm immune from this hatred towards the prequels because I was never there to see the OT episodes in cinemas and love them like you guys did and do, and because I was never there to participate in the high hopes and expectations in the '90s for new SW films (I was only two years old when TPM was released). Yet even though I grew up with the prequels I still agree with the majority of fans that the OT was better, yet I don't hate the prequels and I don't think they were bad. Could the fact that I never saw the original films in cinemas and never got my hopes up for TPM and thus not hate the prequels be proof that the prequels aren't as bad as OT fans perceive them?

Just putting it out there. It's something I've wondered for a while and I'm curious, it's fun to see how people work and it'd be nice to see why fans hate the prequels so much. Razz

Phantom.....3 words Scary - Jar Jar Binks!!

Clones had too much love story & CGI overkill (although it did have some good points.

Sith was the only glimmer of hope in an otherwise pit of poo (IMO)
