Well... Oz is back in the movies.

People are mainly looking forward to this it seems...

Others expecting a musical are looking to this...

This is getting a DVD deal after a really limited run...

I'm waiting on my DVD of this...

And I really look forward to the completion of this indie movie...

(There's other less impressive indie projects in the works as well.)

Wow, who'd think a series of 40+ books that had an expanded universe already built in plus tons of fan-written additions would spawn so many movies?

There's also a slew of Oz comics, too. I can barely keep up with those. (And some... I don't want to...)

Anyone (besides me) seen Oz the Great and Powerful? Not as sci-fi as L. Frank Baum got, sadly...

I really wanted to get to it this weekend, but things didn't work out. How was it?

If you're a fan of the MGM film The Wizard of Oz, your unlicensed prequel has landed. (Second, if you count Wicked.) The film is visually stunning, and I had no acting or CG complaints. (Some do, it seems. Perhaps they're more critical, while I try to enjoy.) The plot is pretty weak, though. Danny Elfman's score worked, but it wasn't memorable. Mariah Carey has a song during the end credits, but it's near the end and I didn't hear it before I left. I have heard it online and didn't care for it.

And for Baum buffs, sorry, this isn't your movie.

I did enjoy it and want to see it again, but it seems it could have been developed into a richer story.

I'm looking forward to it, though I'm disappointed the general reviews have been a bit weak. They say they want to make more films, so maybe it'll get deeper into it after the first one?

There's more backstory they could delve into (and they say it's set 30 years before The Wizard of Oz), but if none of it involves Princess Ozma, I'm going to be a bit miffed.

I enjoyed it! I'm not sure if it was a GREAT movie, but it was a really good, fun one. I'm definitely glad I got to see it on the big screen.

Dorothy of Oz (listed above) has been renamed Legends of Oz: Dorothy Returns, and is estimated to have a First Quarter 2014 release. Disney is going on with a sequel to Oz the Great and Powerful.

I enjoyed OZ, the Great & Powerful more than I expected, mostly because of the flying apes.
Out of the indie trailes, Dorothy & the Witches of Oz looks the most interesting.

I interviewed the writer and director of the independent movie again last night for my podcast.

For an offbeat opening, it starts with us discussing the series 7 finale of Doctor Who.
