In the beginning of the end of time story the Narrator(who is a time lord) says "To the west of the north of that world, the humans did gather in the celebration of a pagan rite to banish the cold and the dark." I always wondered what was meant by that. I would be curious to hear how others interpreted it within the theme of the story.

It's an attempt to say that Christmas is a pagan ritual about banishing winter.

Christmas was originally January 6th, you see. It was made December 25th to merge with, as said above, the pagan solstice. It is also interesting that there are conspiracy theories that December 25th was the birth of the king 'Nimrod' who held power on Earth, was depicted as 'the first warrior on Earth' in the Book of Genesis in the Old Testament, and most interestingly he was rebellious against God.

It's true that it is odd that we celebrate the birth of Christ on a day that originally celebrated completely un-Christian things. But really it doesn't matter which day we celebrate Christmas, does it? If you're a Christian then you're celebrating His birth everyday. Smile

And from the standpoint of the TimeLords, they'd consider any and all customs and celebrations humans performed as "pagan", "primitive", "barbaric", etc.

Sincerely,

Bill

Also, look at what Christmas, and the Holidays do in general. They make people happy and cheery. At a time when they should be miserable and depressed because of the dark and cold and snow. So if you view it like that, we created a winter Holiday to keep us in good spirits, when at that time we should be sad and depressed because of the weather.

Many Christian customs originally derived from various Pagan customs....especially holidays, including someone being born from the heavens, dying, and coming back to life, it's all over the histories of other areas of the world.

Actually, that's true. Interesting... I, of course, was thinking of the common, modern use of the word "pagan," meaning pan or polytheism... Pagani actually started as a derogatory term (pre-Christian) meaning "common," referring to country-dwellers who followed old, bloody customs like child-sacrifice.
