Well, they are made by the same people, aired on BBC, and have elements (especially in Torchwood's case) directly referenced in episodes of Doctor Who... so yeah. The are official continuity.

It's funny that in the last Torchwood, Jack disappears into the TARDIS inside the Hub while Gwen's back is turned, yet on Doctor Who he had to run outside and jump on it.

Yeah, I did note that bit of inconsistency. How did he get out past Ianto, Tosh, and Owen?

Maybe they'll cover that... or maybe they'll ignore it.

With it including Jack and in Season 2 the appearance(s) of Martha, Torchwood would have to be accepted. Likewise with SJA since it features two former companions (K9) and creatures from the whoniverse. With that in mind, how disturbing would it be for them to try to keep crossovers going with SJA and TW crossing paths? Shocked

As far as I'm concerned, the Canon is totally f****d. I mean, in the trailer for "Voyage of the Damned", the Doctor says he's "903 Years old". Yet in the BBC Eighth Doctor books, he's 1000! I just think they're making things up as they go along at this point, ignoring the fact that there was 26 years worth of continuity before hand.
Sure, they get some things right (the cloister bell has the same sound...oooh!), but tell me this? Where was Torchwood while the 3rd Doctor was exiled to Earth?! Are we in some kind of (said through gritted teeth) "Alternate Timeline"?
For every time they get something right, they get something wrong. Granted, I don't care enough to stop watching, but it's still something that bugs the hell out of me.
And as for the companions continually falling in love with him. STOP IT! I'm SICK OF THESE NEEDY FEMALE COMPANIONS!!!!!! Always: "Oooh, why doesn't he NOTICE me?". And "Oh Doctor, let's have a snog!". You didn't see Vicki trying to get it on with HARTNELL! Zoe wasn't Hot For Troughton. (Hot For Troughton...Van Halen?)
Anyway, there it is again. My monthly Continuity rant.

I seem to recall the Doctor's age being an issue in the 80's.

I know in the 80's the age fluctuated worse that the Canadian Dollar, but it's 2007! You'd think they'd figure it out by now! They could have said "I'm the Doctor. I'm over a thousand years old"... This would take away any of the age problems in that it is a non-specific number. But no, they said 903, which makes him YOUNGER than he was in his 4th incarnation! Unless he meant that he was 903 Gallifreyan years old...Then that would mean...Hmmm...Oh yeah! That they appear to take us for new fans and not die-hard veterans! Anyway...Now I'm all worked up again over continuity.

We pretty much have to assume the Doctor is vain about his age or lost count.

Didn't the fourth doctor cause an alternate timeline in Genesis of the Daleks, by delaying them 100 years? Not sure but I think there was another alternate timeline created by the destruction of skaro when it later turned out to not be skaro.

While it may be that they aren't keeping completely true to what came before with the new series, that's not what brought the Doctor back. It was pitched in the way we see it now. With some reference to the past, but from a romanticized, let's gloss over the finer points, rebirth of old things story.

The best thing about the new series is that it is bringing new interest. People check it out, and while they have no idea of the history of a Dalek, they aren't kept from enjoying the show that has one in it. That being only one example it has mostly the same effect. The reaction of "Wait, there's a backstory? I've got to check that out." It's opening the door for people who might never have seen or heard the name of William Hartnell to find out how he connects to David Tennant. While it may be annoying to see something that falls in the realm of cherished memory or accepted canon for us tossed aside with a simple line of dialog that varies from what we accept, it does have the ability to give us something. It brings newcomers looking into that back story or canon to a place like this to learn what it should be.

Of course on the other hand this could all be pointless, since there's a good chance this thought will become part of an alternate timeline in nonexistence as well.

I give up. I'll just be the forever-nerd and point out all the continuity errors and act smug.

Well, at the end of Last of the Timelords he got younger and lost some of his years.

In the context of the current incarnation of Doctor Who, I consider Torchwood and Sarah Jane cannon.

Don't give up, we still count on you to keep the rest of us straight. That and your avatar always seems to make me wonder "what if" Picard had been assigned to the Love Boat, would he have been better off with Gopher than Number one? Which bartender would be the victor in a cage match, Isaac or Guinan? Yep, some days I just follow the path my mind wanders and hope it doesn't lead to things like this, but still, Isaac or Guinan?!

It's actually Alan Partridge fron season one of "I'm Alan Partridge". If you've never seen it, look it ip. Alan is a God who walks among men.
