I enjoyed this movie. Taylor Kitsch & Lynn Collins can actually act, which means they were squandered even more than I thought in the Wolverine movie. It has lots of other actors from other comic book movies too. John Carter is really good at murdering aliens, especially since weak Martian gravity makes him like Superman. It even has adorable alien monsters in it. I haven't read the books yet, but it seems like it kept most of the pulp wierdness instead of modernizing stuff. It's disappointing that there were no licensed products for the film because I would've bought some toys if they were in 6" scale. I hope the terrible marketing & low domestic box office doesn't prevent the other Barsoom books from being adapted.

I'm happy to read your review. I've been a Burroughs fan for a lot of years and have longed for a John Carter film. I hope to see it tomorrow.

Definately on my list to see. As long as fans of this kind of stuff like it, I could give a toss what the "professional reviewers" say. It's not for them anyhow.

It made $30 million in the US, which is very bad considering its budget. I don't know why they decided to release this between The Lorax & The Hunger Games. If they wanted to avoid the summer blockbuster glut, why didn't they release it in the fall? It did make $70 million overseas, so hopefully it'll make make its costs on the foreign markets.
I was surprised that director Andrew Stanton may have been responsible for much of the lackluster ads. The reviewers annoyed me because they kept describing it as derivative & uninspired. They kept comparing it Avatar & Attack of the Clones, not taking into account that ERB wrote the books a century ago. They couldn't remove all the parts that later sci-fi movies stole from it without making a movie completely unlike ERB's books.

I saw an interview with the studio head and he said they were only expecting about $36 mil domestically and that the bulk of the profits would be coming from overseas. Though that might have just been a "damage control" statement....

I haven't seen it yet but hope to soon. I just can't find a theater that isn't showing it in 3D.

I really don't understand how a movie that is very enjoyable gets trashed so bad before it is even released. Are there really that many people online who just want to hate something for no reason?

It "probably holds the record for having the longest period of "development heck" for any movie, at 79 years. Preproduction for a film version first started in 1931, when Robert Clampett (director of 'Looney Tunes') approached author Edgar Rice Burroughs to make an animated feature out of the first book in the series, "A Princess of Mars" (the same story that this film is an adaptation of). Had plans gone through, 'John Carter' could have become the world's first animated feature, beating Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). The film finally left development heck in January 2010 when filming officially started in London."

Nope. Earliest extant animated feature was 1926.

New article... Disney is acknowledging that they will probably taking a loss of 200 million on John Carter.

Disney hardly makes movies anyhow, their empire is based on their theme parks and merchandising, movies are a drop in the bucket. And it seemed they were actually bashing the film deliberately.

anyhow, don't give a darn bout film critics, I never use them when choosing films to watch. Plus lots of folks are saying how awesome this film is, and are watching it 3, 4, 5, 6 times. Film critics, to me, are worthless.

What's interesting, this film has a LOT, I mean a LOT of stuff I've seen in my own paranormal Mars research, from torsion fields to the catastrophe that left Mars as it is now.

Finally saw it yesterday and I greatly enjoyed it. Don't ask me to explain it yet (it might take another viewing or two), but it was a fun, entertaining movie. Wish I'd have seen it on the big screen as it's very "grand" in scale.

See? Film critics, and Disney themselves are sooooooo full of you know what, that one can smell it when they open their worthless mouths. Laughing
I hope the DVD comes soon, I really want to get some screen captures to compare to my research findings and see just how much the author seemed to know. afro

Exactly.

I enjoyed it when I saw it in the theater and I will enjoy it when I watch my Blu-Ray copy. Just annoyed that there won't be any sequels...plus they should have kept the title as "John Carter of Mars" IMO.

Disney bashed their own film, even they went so far as to mess with the title. Everyone out there, normal people, not snobby reviewers an critics, loved this, and went to see it several more times. afro

Disney should use some of its Avengers money to fund a sequel.

I watched it again this week, and I still loved it. Maybe someday more folks will look back on it and it will be appreciated properly, like The Black Hole, The Rocketeer, or TRON.
