I'm glad Jackson did this. I don't think Del Torro would have done as well.

I'm cool with waiting a year. It took us several years already to get news that the movie would happen! Pretty sure speculation about The Hobbit as a film started with news that The Lord of the Rings was being filmed.

It was 3 years after The Return of the King that we got news that the distribution issues had been sorted out, then two more years when we heard Guillermo Del Toro would be directing. And then in mid-2010, we heard Del Toro was out then later that Jackson would take the reins. And now, in the end of 2011, we have a trailer. A real, honest-to-goodness trailer. (Hey, there are some good fan trailers out there.) With news we only have one more year... For part 1 of the story.

New trailer today! MSN has a low quality (but not unwatchable) version, and Sylvester McCoy's featured in it!

http://video.howzit.msn.com/watch/video/the-hobbit-an-unexpected-journey-full-trailer-exclusive-to-msn/183rm2wjy

(I'll keep my eyes open for a better quality one.)

I'd say I'm even more excited, but I didn't need any more encouragement to go see this movie.

Awesome!! Only a few months left!

Our biggest discussion seams to be, where are they gonna cut the story? I say after getting caught by the spiders. That would leave a good cliffhanger. But, a friend says he thinks it will be a bit earlier, after Gandalf leaves them at the edge of Mirkwood. That would be the point that he goes off to deal with the Necromancer and would give plenty of material for an expanded 2nd movie. I am also expecting the Battle of Five Armies to be expanded, since Bilbo missed most of it,and so did we in the book.

Oooh, I cannot wait to see this.

Hmmph, will have to plan for a Hobbit plus Lord of the Rings New Year's Eve party again (the last time we showed the LOTR extended edition, it took 13 hours to complete!! - what great fun it was too......)

Oh, it gets better! At the trailer site, you can see four alternate versions of the trailer with a different clip right after the title:

I'm both excited and apprehensive about the film.

Excited because it's the Hobbit.

Apprehensive because it's the Hobbit, and I'm baffled as to how Jackson plans to spin the tale out for three movies. I fear a great deal of fluff in the vein of his King Kong outing - namely the "Let's pause from the thrilling action to have five minutes of a woman and a giant gorilla ice skating in Central Park".

I heard that at least one of the movies is going to be an original story, meant to bridge the gap between Tolkien's stories.

It's looking more like the first movie will kick off the story with the Unexpected Party, ending with the Eagles rescuing them from Beorn, or about to enter Mirkwood, or even the dwarves arriving by barrel in Esgaroth (Laketown).

Second one will focus on Dol Guldur and the White Council and the Death of Smaug.

Third one: the Battle of the Five Armies.

Jackson has plenty of chances to fluff the story.

My sister is excited about the Aidan Turner dwarf. I told her that the top Internet theory of how he could be beardless is that his character is actually a female as there's less differences between dwarven genders. She was not pleased.

Yea, but his other films went fine, the Rings films he did were not bad at all. In fact, I have more faith in him than I do with overrated hacks like Lucas and Abrams who either alienate long time fans, just to make the joe sixpacks happy, or not even being fans of the series they are making films of. Jackson did his very best to make everyone happy with the rings films. I bet even Tolken would have approved, had he been alive today. afro

Does it bother anyone else that in the LOTR flashbacks where Bilbo finds the Ring he's in green with a burgundy vest whereas in The Hobbit he's wearing burgundy with a green vest?

But it's a continuity error that could've easily been avoided!

Those are little things I don't care about, really. It's the story that counts, not weather or not a wardrobe error was done. Razz

George Lucas would have released a special version of LOTR with Martin Freeman replacing the earlier Bilbo. And replaced Gollum too.

So,no,it doesn't bother me.

I almost wonder if PJ will do the same thing, or perhaps in a future release of The Fellowship of the Ring, have an alternate version done by seamless branching that replaces that prologue scene with a clip from The Hobbit, and possibly having the Gollum scenes redone.

Anyone not in the know, Gollum's design changed between the first two Lord of the Rings movies. However, since Gollum isn't seen clearly in Fellowship, a lot of people don't really mind this.

Bilbo was old and getting senile... he just didn't remember what vest he was wearing.
