I think, in part, it must be. I mean, it's impossible not to think of it...so, I'm sure they had that in mind during this episode.

In the episode Inferno, the evil Brigadier had an eyepatch on an alternate Earth. During filming, the rest of the cast tried to break Nick up by wearing eyepatches too. He always told that story at conventions. So,one time, at a convention, the entire audience wore patches. He loved it.

So, I like to think, the eyepatch has been a tribute for the entire season.

Didn't they film this series before spring though when you said he passed away?

It is a nod to all that...Ron didn't mean filming of this episode, he meant filming of that story. This was filmed after he passed away.

I was a little "NO!" when I saw the Brig's death. I didn't want the Brigadier to be dead in the Whoniverse! But then, it was a great way to pay tribute to Nick Courtney to have the Brig's passing as the thing that brings the Doctor to a full realization of what he needs to do.

Maybe Moff will write in some tribute to Liz Sladen in Series 7. Here's hoping no death of SJS...

EDIT: When we realized the "pay off" of Rory's deaths (Amy actually saves him instead of letting him die), what the Doctor did to survive, we totally cheered.

But... Umm.... Was the Doctor operating the Tesselacta alone at Silencio? I couldn't believe he'd let the operating crew be burned to death by his pyre.

Another thing I really liked about this was the scene at the lake....where River doesn't want to kill him, she says that time can be rewritten and he says 'Don't you dare'...it mirrors their dialogue in 'Forest of the Dead', just before River's death...where they say those same words, the Doctor being the one saying time can be rewritten and River saying 'Don't you dare'.

The Song Remains the Same The Doctor's death was a fixed point in Space and Time. He did not die. Two possible explanations.

His death was a story.

The creepy, white Silence dudes control time. affraid
They were at the lake to verify his death. Once they thought he was dead, time resumed.

I personally think and hope, these creepy white dudes have become an adversary. There are no Time Lords, No Competition to control "Reality".

I hope Moffat doesn't hate Christmas and invade Earth again.

Okay, did the Dalek at the beginning make anyone else think, "Wait, how are Daleks going to be a big threat again if we just saw the Doctor single handedly tear one apart?"

He probably learned that from Rory.

I liked the tribute to the Brig. I thought it was a nice touch. Great season finally, but yeah odd it was self contained with no part I and II. I liked how they worked around his death, but can the Doctor really lay low from the Universe? I think not. I wonder if will ever know all the facts about the man himself...naw would kill the fun. farao

The Song Remains the Same is a "trick" remark. Rolling Eyes

The Doctor's death at the lake, as a urban legend and the creepy, white Silence dudes controlling reality are the same. Reality shifted when River discharged her weapon. Reality should have shifted AFTER the fire because the Doctor was not dead. His death was a fixed point in space and time not an event in "still time waters". jocolor The Doctor was placed in the witness protection program. clown

The creepy, white Silence dudes probable got mad at the Doctor for saving Brooks and others from the Mars Base (Water of Mars Time Lord Victorious). If one believes the truth of them being the keepers of history this makes sense. I hope Moffat doesn't go that route. I hope we will be seeing some serious conflicts between them for control of reality.

Some questions:
  • How have they (creepy, white Silence dudes affraid ) been rewriting history? Nobody, but the Doctor, remembers of the Cyber King in Old London Town.
  • Why are there never any ducks in the duck pond?
  • Is Leadworth a place in "Still Water of Time"?
  • Who borrowed Rory's car (11th Hour?

Ronpur wrote:
WOW!! There is one thing about this episode that hit me, and those who know me must know what that was. But first....

Duh, the question hidden in plain site since day one of the series...DOCTOR WHO? Absolutely brilliant. Because, if that question is ever answer, the show is over. So,now, back to the shadows, dropping in, fixing things and leaving before anyone can say thanks. The classic Doctor, no longer a God. This could be a game changer for the series. the emotional scene on the pyramid was so tense, I though anything could happen. And using the robot.....look into my eye, River. Very cleaver. And the Charles Dickens, great cameo!!

And the mention of the Brigadier dying. I stopped the episode because I started crying. That was a fantastic simple tribute to the character so loved and brought to life by Nicholas Courtney. Everyday, putting out a drink for the Doctor, just in case he came. Perfect for both. Thank you, Steven Moffat for a fantastic tribute. (And a darn fine finally)

i have nothing to say, ronpur just said it all, and on the brigider thing, man at first it made me cry because of the obviouse reasons, then it touched me deeper because until the end, it makes you think that his death gave the doctor the courage to face his own, then i began thinking at the end that, it was the moment that made him wanna fight for his life, he didn't need the thousands of people river was trying to contact, he just needed that one confrimation from a man whom he loved dearly, i'm actully getting kikda teary as i write this, that scene was so perfect, it didn't have to be some overblown moment, moff added alot of class to his resume with how he dealt with that, and he even made it relevant to the story, and i will always have deep respect for moffat for that. that scene reminded me of when my beloved grandmother died, it was just like nicks death, i was so emotional for both of them, but i couldn't get the emotions out at the moment it happened, even though i thought i was supposed too, i knew i should be more emotional than i was, but it wasn't until later when i found an old picture of me and my gran together that the tears came to me in honest fashion and thats kinda what happened to me while watching the episode, its like you knew he was gone, his physical form had moved on, but it wasn't until they said that the brig had passed away on who that it just hit home for me and made it real, i know you guys understand so i won't be self concious and apologize for being so emotional like i would otherwise, i was truely touched.

i have really enjoyed the show since moff took over, i like the stand alones, i love the way he plays with time, i love the way he reset the daleks back to square one. so many more things as well.

i kept thinking of rivers death with tennat, and how much more those episodes are truley touching.
i loved the end where amy and river are comparing their diary's.
i loved the line river makes about how she was just with her at the wreck of the byzantium, and couldn't tell her she was her mum.

i remembered how some parents were outraged that amy and rory seemed so unconcerend about finding their baby girl, and how moff payed tribute to that emotion and story angle when amy has her showdown and kills madame kavorian. her dialouge and delivery in that scene was spot on.

i love how they swerve you for a second, oh no rory is gonna die, again, even the silence taunts him for this, and then BAM! machine gun amy in the house.

and this just has to be said, ive been reading doctor who's marvel comics since i was a little kid and this episode was the closest visually, and story wise in my opinion that has ever been up to the standards of what those comics did when they were good. he really used the special effects well in this episode.

i loved as ronpur said getting the actor from series one to repirse his role as charles dickenson even for a the short cameo he had, and even deeper in that was the inside joke about the anouncer asking "whats the christmas special gonna be this year" when the last christmas special was the tale of scrooge.

one thing i love about the way moff is doing things and this plays into my love of how he likes to play with time, by doing these characters and stories out of order for time travelers, makes each time i go back and rewatch them even more fun because now i notice and i guess more so understand where the characters are in what they know about the past and the future, going back and watching the wreck of the byzantim two part angels story will be paticularlly more fun now.

i love the way moff ended it, ive said in previous posts, and it was actually brettowen who got me thinking about this, of how moff is kinda doing the cartmal thing and taking the doctor back to his roots, this happens in comics all the time, storylines get so big and convaluted eventually they just reset things, which i have enjoyed from time to time, but i always felt it was a bit of a cop out on the comics side of it, what moff has done to me is more interesting and true to the character. hes like i said reset the daleks, i have to believe that this is going to happen to the cybermen at some point, hes given back the doctors mortality, which under jnt just got kind of redundent, by which i mean its hard to feel anysense of danger when your constantlly being reminded that the doc has 6 regenerations left or 5 with the next and so on and so on. hes restored the mystery about the doctor, and made him more elusive, i have to stop for a moment and give rtd some credit for this too, because in his own way he planted some of the seeds for this to come about now. hes now a mad man in a box again, i can't help thinking that when he pulls out his card in vampires of venice and shows a picture of hartnall that, it was a sign of things to come.

i love the way that the new series has the time to invest in the supporting cast, the way the old show couldn't because of the difference in the times back then, i especially love rory and amy, and how their love is so strong, they keep finding each other.

i love how they didn't cop out and save the doc by doing the exact thing they said could never be done, and then just do it anyway. i find it more interesting that the doctor has died for all intents and purposes, and now hes gotta lay low, much the same way he was laying low when bill was at the head of the console.

i am biased, i admit it, i have been on board with moff since day one and i am loving what he has done and is prob, doing. i think for all the crap he gets the thing i always think of is hes a fan, just like us, who got his dream job of a life time, if any of us got that oppertunity we might do things different, but hes just doing what he as a fan thinks would be cool, and love him or hate him for it i respect him for doing it his way and sticking to his guns.

and i love the way, he makes the show for kids again, some of my oldest and dearest friends who are like my second family, are siblings, six kids in all, and they've all gone on to have kids who are ages 6 through 15, and they all live the show, when they watch it, its grandma and grandpa, six aunts and uncles, and six nephews and neices and they all as a giant family sit down and watch doctor who every week as family, and to me thats one of the most incredible aspects of doctor who, it reminds me of when, my mom told me stories of how her family would get together and watch star trek as a family. i can't speak for everyone here on the forum but in my personal life i know atleast ten kids, ages 6 to 15 who watch the show every week and to me thats what really matters for doctor who and i think moff understands that and taylors the show to the kids, just my opinion, but i think thats hella cool.

clearly ive rambled enough and if you made it through my essay thanks for reading. i can't wait for more, and christmas is now even more fun since the new series started, i love getting who for christmas anyway, now i got new who every year.

it's not easy to answer, you need to go back and watch the old who, but the best way i can describe it is he's one of the most signifigant characters in the shows history, hes as close to being one of the doctors from a fans love standpoint as you can get without actually being one of the doctors, not only did he and his millitary team appear as regular cast members for all five years of pertwees run, but he was often like the watson to holmes, but the character contrast was more diverse because the doctor was kind of a revolutionary peace nik and the brigg was the millitary man so their interactions were alway great because they saw the world through different eyes and pov's. the other thing that you have to remember is that the character of lethbridge stewart interacted with all the classic doctors in the show except colin baker and he appeared in a story with bill hartnell as a completely different character so nicholas courtney has the distenction of having appeared and worked with all the doctors, sans colin in the shows original run. not only was he a great man, who was always kind and giving to his fans at conventions but his character is one of the most beloved in the shows history. i think sadly the only other character or person who was that beloved by who fans was liz sladen who just had that "it" factor that fans responded to. if your an older person, such as whosier, or ronpur(said with affection, just mean you guys are older and wiser. lol) he was one of the central characters on a show, (i feel safe in talking for you guys for a sec but if i'm totally wrong please feel free to correct me, i won't be affended cause i respect the heck outta both you guy's) that was beloved by them in their younger days when sci fi was alot different and doctor who was and still is the only show like it in the world, and they were tremendous fans of its uniqueness, and part of that uniqueness was a stong character like the brigg. if you were younger like me, i started watching who around 9 years old he was simply put one of the best role models and incredible characters from my childhood. he was every bit as important to me as the tardis itself, and this you have to keep in mind for me was a character i only saw starting from robot the first episode of tom bakers run, and was not heavily featured from that point on, but he was so good in his role that he won my heart in the three ep's he did with tom and his subseqent stories afterwards with the other doctors. by the time i got through mccoy, and pbs aired pertwees run again basically restarting the shows run on pbs again i got to see the brig and unit in all of its glory, it was kinda like the starwars prequels for me, only good. i could go on about nick all night esp with how emotional this episode made me feel tonight but, i think thats the best i can do to help ya out, some day watch the old stuff, heck do what scary did and start a thread on here with a topic like how should i watch the brig's eps, what order or what ones do you think are essential to see and i'm sure you'll get plenty of post to help you out Very Happy

this kinda made me think of something i was discussing with my buddy earlier, today and forgot to include in my earlier essay.lol but one thing rtd did by putting the timelords in a box until someones ready to pull them out again was to take away that safety net, of all knowing all powerfull people who could intervene at any point or become stagnant with there indifference to all the goings on in the universe. once again in my moff love i gotta say continuing this keeps going back to my and i guess brettowens original cartmal plan theory that moff is taking the show back to its roots. by not having the time lords its like when you were zipping around the universe with hartnell not knowing about all this elaborate back story and adding more mystery to the doctor. Very Happy
