Somehow I thought he was going to be around forever.

Goodbye, Nick. You will be missed. Sad

I will wear my UNIT Beret tonight.

dont feel bad ron, i was moved to a few man tears myself. his character has been with me since i first started watching who, actully now i think about it since i started with robot when i was a kid, him and liz sladen were the first people i saw. now i'm reflecting on the future and i know im gonna be a wreck when a certian scarfed hero passes. i met him when i was 12 at a convention and he signed a picture for me that ive had framed in my room what feels like my whole life, and has always been a treasured piece of my who collection. we all know our actor hero's are getting older, but at least there characters will live forever. god bless the brig and god bless nick. Very Happy Sad

I was lucky enough to meet him at Gally One a long time back. He was just lovely, and he'll be missed. He was a large part of my childhood.

RIP Nicholas. I am deeply saddened by this loss. The rest of the week will be dedicated to watching stories with the Brig.

I am just thinking of how the show should do a tribute. Obviously, the first episode needs to be dedicated to him, but in universe, I would love to see Matt just visit the Brigs grave, and say something simple about him being a splendid chap. I am sure Sarah Jane will have an in universe tribute.

I wrote a short piece about him here and made a video here in dedication to his memory.

I actually can't believe he's gone... Sad

We still get to hear him give commentary for Ambassadors of Death, Terror of the Autons, The Daemons, and Planet of the Spiders at least. Like Barry Letts, he lives on through the DVDs yet to be released.

Great tributes, Chris. I know one thing - Nick will be looking down and be most delighted at all the love everyone is showing him. Still, its so sad to see him go. He's been in at least one episode with every classic Doctor and that truly makes him a big chunk of Who history. R.I.P wonderful chap. Sad

Thanks. Got Jon in it, too! The Brig could very well be the most loved "companion" ever. Still broken up about it...

That's awesome! It sums up the Brigadier's role in Who very well. I'll keep that video close to heart hence forth. Thanks for sharing.

From Tom Baker -

"Nick Courtney died yesterday after a very long and painful battle with cancer. I went to say goodbye to him on Friday at the wonderful hospice near Belsize Park in North London. The lady in charge said he was very stoical. And indeed he was. It was so distressing to see him so weak and yet so strong in resignation. My jokes were received with a generous effort from Nick to smile. I was with Michael McManus who helped me through the ordeal of seeing a beloved old pal so reduced by illness.

Of all the characters in Doctor Who there is no doubt that he was the most loved by the fans for his wonderful portrayal of the rather pompous Brigadier. "Five rounds rapid" was the line we all loved, always addressed to Sergeant Benton. Nick's close friends simply adored him. There was a certain innocence in his personality that was utterly endearing. He was very easy to tease, and I did my share, which made him shake his head in disbelief when he realised he had been had.

He was a wonderful companion and his friends would call each other or e-mail to relate the latest little stories of a night out with the Brig. He had a marvellous resonant voice which he used brilliantly when it was his turn to spin a yarn. And his background was fascinating too: born in Alexandria, Egypt, he was brought up speaking French and Arabic. Later he perfected English and after a few drinks he would speak in Latin tags to great comic effect.

We shall miss him terribly."

Thanks, rdks, for that presenting that statement from Tom Baker. Very heartfelt.

I bet that he, Jon, and Roger are probably having a bit of a laugh up in heaven right now catching up and telling stories...

Now that Katy's living in England again, I hope she got to see Nick, too, before he passed. Lis as well. Well, everyone he touched in the Who family, really, but especially Katy and Lis. Oh - and Carrie John, too!

BTW, I, like ronpur, am touched that so many of us have changed our avatars to pics of Nick. A nice, simple tribute to our fallen hero.
