Matt Smith auditioned for the role of Dr. John Watson on Sherlock just before he was cast as the Doctor. He was rejected for being too Holmsey and not Watson enough.

And now she's married to Richard Dawkins, who briefly appeared in The Stolen Earth.

Blimey! Like... in real life? Tom Baker and Lala Ward were married? Or the Doctor and Romana?

Sadly, it did not "pan out". They divorced and it was a bitter, bitter affair. It's "claimed" Ms. Ward once stated, "I was married to a Doctor Who 'monster'," to which someone countered, "I thought you married Tom Baker?" and she supposedly countered, "Yes, eaxctly!" (I hope that latter was just crap made up by the tabloids, but it is fact they divorced.)

Sincerely,

Bill

Continuing on the 4th Doctor page, just before casting Tom Baker in the role TPTB were thinking that the actor they chose was going to be much older like the age of William Hartnell (1st Doctor). As a result, Harry Sullivan was born to take care of the physical action in the show. With Baker in the role the need for Harry was not there any more which is why he did not have a very long run in the series.

Personally, I would've loved it if Harry stayed on longer because I thought the Doctor, Sarah and Harry had great chemistry together.

That's the anecdote I usually pass around. Yes, Harry was meant to be the new Ian (which is rather befitting as it was his real name). One may notice how certain scenes were written in the 12th series. The Doctor sends Harry to remove a component from Styre's pod; he drives Bessie while the Doctor flings the goo to shrink K*1; he adds shale to support a land mine the Doctor has tread upon while on Skaro, etc.

As you pointed out, there was some honest chemistry among the three. Both Baker and Sladen had some really nice things to say about Ian Marter in the DVD commentaries. And it wasn't just "lip service" for the "dearly departed". Tom mentioned Marter joining him while on "holiday". That's just something you would not normally do if you didn't like the other person.

An Harry seems to have been the last male traveling companion the audience has almost universally liked, at least until Rory.

Sincerely,

Bill

Harry was the #2 choice for what eventually became the Brigadier's part in Mawdryn Undead. The first choice was William Russell.

Brought a tear to my eye when I saw his picture on Sarah Jane's wall in the first episode of her series.

What about Turlough? I loved Turlough from the beginning. His appearance in his swimming trunks only helped me to like him more. Laughing

It would've been better if they managed to find a picture that wasn't from the tv series itself but it was still heartfelt though.

Turlough, to me, had a personality of a clam. Razz

Anyhow, I think the stuff Mrs. Ward said about Tom might just be some "Angry ex who wants to make his/her ex look bad." I see it happening all the time.

Did you know... that in "An Earthly Child" (BFA drama) Paul McGann's son was in it, playing the Doctor's great great grandchild? It was fun listening to them both talk on the extras. Also, Paul McGann didn't know the Doctor had a grandchild until they did that play.

When going up for the role of the 8th Doctor not only was Paul McGann trying to win the role, but so wasn't his brother.
