I am just curious as to how many forum members consider the 5th Doctor to be at the top of their list?

He's definitely in my top 5. But then, I'm weird. Tom Baker isn't in my top 5.

That isn't weird at all, its your opinion! Smile

Davison probably is in my top 5 as well... My top 5 would be:

1. Tennant
2. McGann
3. Troughton
4. Davison
5. McCoy

Roughly. Tied with Troughton (who'd be a definite first if a few more stories were still around) and McCoy (who'd be a definite second if he had one more good season) at the top for me.

Here is a question for you Corvus.... Do you own the book Doctor Who The Making of a Television Series by Alan Road ?

It details the making of The Visitation as well as discussing the history, up to that point of the program.

I have heard of the book, but alas, I do not own it as yet.

Send my your address. I have an extra copy now and although there is a slight tear at the top of the spine, it is still in great condition. I decided to give it to someone who likes the 5th Doctor.

Corvus - Since you like the 5th Doctor and I have huge reservations about him, what would you suggest as a starting point?

I'm also not sure I want my first episodes with him to involve the Daleks, despite my love for them.

How about Cybermen? Try Earthshock, the new purfume by Lisa Simpson...

No... But yes.. Earthshock would be a great story to start with! Its my favourite of all his work and you might like it. It might even encourage you to purchase some Earthshock Cybermen!

Gosh I loathe the Cybermen! I'd watch it though, because their stories are interesting, I just don't like them too much. One of these years I have to get Cybermen myself, to give my Daleks some target practice...

Thanks for the rec!

Hoosier, will do. Expect a pm!

a1, I will come up with a list of good Davison stories for you, but off the top of my head I highly suggest "Kinda", which isn't your standard Doctor WHO story: its pretty darned deep. Just overlook some dodgy effects later on *lol*

Also highly suggested: "Black Orchid". Its not superb, but its a good story, and its short. I have a real soft-spot for it. Only 2 episodes, so its as long as a single Nu-Who episode.

And "Earthshock" is indeed highly suggested, but see the others first.

I really like deep episodes and anything that will show off Peter Davidson as the Doctor will have a better chance at winning me over rather than episodes with just a bunch of running. Dodgy effects have never made me dislike something, well, in "Windtalkers" there were several things... but when it comes to older tv shows, they don't phase me a bit. The story generally outweighs anything bad in the special effects area.

Thanks for the recs!

I'd have to say start at the end-- Caves of Androzani. Sure, you may set the bar a bit too high for the rest of his stories, but it's considered one of the best classic Who stories for a reason. That, or maybe Five Doctors, which isn't the greatest the story ever, but it's fun to see four of the first five Docs together, and Davison takes the lead role as incumbent. Also, the Cybermen get a lot of what's coming to them, you should enjoy that Laughing

That said, I even like Warriors of the Deep, so take my advice as you will Wink

Excellent. From our conversations, a1, I figured Kinda may indeed fill the bill. It has a sequel in Davison's second season, Snakedance, and its quite deep and very good as well.

Oh, and definitely Caves, but since that's his last story, I'd save it for last out of the list. Plus, best for last and all of that Very Happy

Don't tell John Levene this! He hates Davidson (he talked about that a couple of years ago in conversation at a mini con).

What reason did he give?

And I'd tell him in a hot second.

Honestly, I don't remember, but he was asked to be in The Five Doctors, and said no. He REALLY loved working with Pertwee though. Talked highly of him.

I am sadly undereducated on Davison. I saw Earthshock and Caves, both very good. But I'm watching the series in order and am only halfway through Pertwee right now, so it'll be awhile before I get to him.

Well, the daleks are over rated piles of crap, that have lost their inititial menace over the years, in my opinion.
