Yet again another DVD has gone bad on me. And once again it was
one made in 2008. 4th Dr story - Planet of Evil.
Plays the first 3 parts. And that's it. Part 4 won't load.

I've complained about this before and it seems there is no solution
other than to buy a new one. But with this one out of production
now the prices are ridiculous. And who's to say that years
later the same thing won't happen again?

I'd say try to contact Warner anyway. They're bound to have a copy or two laying around. I doubt they'd leave you with a bad disc.

I've had some DVDs stop playing when they reach a certain part of the disc, usually the end. "The Armageddon Factor" and "The Power of Kroll" are two of those for me, both being from the (very old now) original box set of the Key to Time.

I had this problem with the R2 Version of The Faceless Ones on the Lost in Time DVD set. It would freeze during those episodes but played everything else fine. After The DVD player died I played it in another multi region player and it played just fine?????

Weird, was it possibly a thing with that DVD player and the fact it was likely a dual layer disc?

No ideas I have had very few Store bought DVDs where I had an issue, I remember back about 12 years ago my SONY R1 player did not like the menu's on my R1  ROSEWELLs DVD and it would freeze on the menus when I hit play.

Turned out to be the DVD player and not the DVDs as it plays fine on other players.  I think it might be a cheapo DVD player or one with a dirty video head (or what ever you call the laser pointer these day)  I have a CD / DVD player cleaner that I have to use every now and then and I find it helps

I have a PS3, a regular DVD player and the computer.
It does the same thing on all 3 machines.

It has something to do with the year. I think they must have
changed to a cheaper process. I have older DVD's that are
just fine.

I don't think that's the case. I have Genesis of the Daleks, E -Space Trilogy, Dalek War, and Five Doctors all from last year and they work perfectly.

If all your bad DVDs are from one manufacture and all your other ones work fine then it might have something to do with the manufacturing process.

As a last resort try an brand new player if at all possible to see if its a firmware issue

It has to be 2007 - 2008.

I just watched Pyramids of Mars which is from 2004 and it is fine.

Is there more than one person here who have issues with a DVD of the same story that will not play?

I remember when "City of Death" first came out on DVD, I exchanged it three times before giving up. Some of my DVD players would play it, others wouldn't. Not sure what year that was released.

I happened to watch "The Power of Kroll" a couple of weeks ago, without incident, though that was the copy from the more recent re-release of "The Key To Time" box set, not the original one from 2002/2003-ish.

some DVD players (especially "old" ones) don't cope very well with layer changes.

I'm pretty sure I recall reading that the BBC Restoration Team tried sending instructions to the authoring house to place layer changes between episodes (so they'd never appear during playback), but many times, their instructions were ignored.

If an older player has a newer firmware version available online, one could consider downloading the firmware, burning it to disc and updating the player.

Beyond that, a newer player (such as one made within the last five years or so) would probably fix such issues.

I do think, though, that some of the earliest "made in Mexico" DVDs distributed by Warner had the occasional bad production batch. Not sure when they started sourcing replication from there, but that might also be a factor.

In the case of multiple copies of the same title all being "bad", that would seem to point more to a player incompatibility than bad discs, though.

I listened to a Big Finish CD last night "Loups Garrox" with Peter Davison for the first time since I got it back in 2001. it played perfectly despite sitting undisturbed on the shelf for 15 years.

I also watched some DVDs earlier in the week that I made on DVD-RW back in November 2003 for the first time and they played back perfectly on both a Windows 10 computer and the assorted DVD players that I tried them on

Make certain you have updated firmware on your DVD player. Always try a backup dvd player if one does not work before blaming the disc.

That is the exact reason that I have multiple multi region DVD and Blue Ray players so that if I have trouble with one DVD or BD I can try it on multiple players before deciding that I need to send a DVD back to the UK, Australia or New Zealand
