There, see how much better it can be if ya don't try to update, invigorate or re-imagine anything from the old series?

No Daleks/Davros, no Time War, no Master, no Last Of The Timelords, no super smart companion, no 13 episode story arcs...

Just a good yarn. Well, so far anyway, hopefully they don't drop the ball on the ending.

It's only getting a "good" until I'm sure they don't somehow manage to bugger it up in the second half. But otherwise that was a good, scary story. Just enough comedy with the flashcards and Clara did well showing how she is now more reckless and the Doctor is at least warning her of this danger. Nobody acting out of character, no messing about with continuity (UNIT is mentioned but it only seems natural to know about in 100 years), and even the sonic sunglasses were not handled in a ridiculous manner.

Now only if they'd get rid of that silly phrase "deadlocked". They give the Doctor a magic wand (or eye-wear) and then need to come up with a more magical explanation of how it sometimes doesn't work if necessitated by the plot. All people of all ages are able to build "deadlocks" when convenient. If the sonic were just "less powerful" or occasionally forgotten in another pocket then we could be done with this concept.

And if that is the worst criticism I've got about this episode then it must have been pretty good.

I'm not too worried about part 2...Toby Whithouse hasn't let me down yet.

I gave it a Good vote so far as well so we'll see how it plays out.My guess is the Doctor is in the stasis pod.

I liked the eerieness of the episode and the new Tardis interior.

Cons

The sonicsunglasses are pointless in use and feel stupid when used.I'd rather a Sonic Ring or watch.

The year 2119 and science hasn't developed a new procedure to cure deafness? Why didn't the Doctor know how to sign?He can speak to fish on Casteborus 9 but he hasn't picked up how to sign on Earth in all his travels? He should have been able to read lips as well or the Tardis could've translated her sign language.Small gripe though.

Clara seems very out of joint and is even getting on the Doctor's nerves now it seems so her "moment" is being prepared for soon I hope.

Hope this ep ends well.

I liked it. Back to the 'base under siege' formula.
