I thought both the Whomobile and Bessie are with private collectors after the end of Pertwee's reign. Needed someone who could look after the vehicles properly. I could swear I've even seen recent photos of a fresh paint-job in the past 5 years. Wasn't aware that the BBC lost track of who had it.

Bessie is the property of the BBC, and as such is in the exhibition run. The Whomobile was commissioned by Pertwee and when he left the show it left with him. He did sell it a few years later to a private individual and it pretty much dropped off the radar at that time.

Here is the story

Pertwee sold to a guy in 1994 when Pertwee died in 96 the guy locked it away not to look at it for over 20 years.

Odd that this was reported as lost as the owner has been fairly open about having it over the years.

It's quite surprising just how many props from the original run still exists, tucked away in various private collections. It's like the TARDIS props, pretty much all of them are still around, just not necessarily all in the hands of the BBC.
