What's your pick of the best of the Fifth?

Although not a "popular choice," I really love Four to Doomsday.

It would have to be Caves of Androzani. One of the best of the entire series.
Sharaz Jek is such a great character.

I agree about Caves, but Earthshock is my favorite, because, you know, CYBERMEN!!

I like Four to Doomsday also, it really feels like a spaceship, of course Frontios is a close second.

Either Earthshock, or The Five Doctors.

This one's tough. Earthshock and Caves are pretty great, near the bests stories made. (Caves probably the very best ever.)

I will never understand why ANYONE likes Caves of Androzani. IMO it's a grim, bleak, overall bad episode that I get a headache from watching. What's the appeal?

Part of the appeal of Caves is its seriousness and bleakness. It's also high drama and one of the few times where the Doctor feels legitimately in danger the whole time. It harks back to the moralizing of the Pertwee/Baker years but with a much murkier sense of right and wrong. Plus it really allowed Peter Davison to act in a way that a lot of other episodes that season didn't. As related by the writer in Doctor Who Magazine when they listed it the best episode of Who, it's also a farce. It's purposefully oversold on the grim, on the drama to make a point about corporations.

"Caves" is dark and bleak, but with episode 4 being a pulse-pounding, nail-biting adventure. Everyone appears to be misguided to down-right evil. Not a single angel in the guest cast so the viewer keeps on changing who they're going to root for. Sure a lot of folks die, but each death is a pretty dramatic and terrible ending. Compare that to "Resurrection of the Daleks" which is a lot of meaningless B-movie deaths. The opening with the police starts off tense, but by the end of part 2 (or part 4 depending on which cut) everyone is just walking around a corner and dying. Compare Davison showing up and limply telling Davros "I'm here as your executioner" versus the grit when he crashes the spaceship back into Androzoni while holding back the regeneration. "Caves" is the superior episode (if only the magma beast could have been cut from the final edit...)

Still not sure if Androzoni is my favorite as I also enjoy Earthshock and Enlightenment. Getting the Frontios DVD actually hurt my rating as it didn't seem to hold up as well.
