Airfix model pics - unbuilt

Hey, all. Just received my Airfix model, and thought I would share some pics and thoughts for anyone who might be debating whether or not to purchase it. I know $60.00 might seem like a lot of money, but I think it's worth it. The detail that they have put into this is amazing. I got excited like a 6 year old on Christmas morning when I opened the box and saw all those plastic bits. I'll get the pics up as soon as I figure out how I did it the last time. It's not working for some reason.

It's interesting how the heads and arms are cast in a rubbery plastic, almost like the action figure material. I'll be posting more pics as I go. I'm sure there are some other fourm members who will be posting pics of their kits as well. It will be nice to see them all. This will keep me busy for the rest of these cold Winter nights (when I'm not with my Girlfriend) Wink

It's an amazing kit! If I ever though I'd put it together I'd totally get it.

I couldn't wait to start building this kit, so I started late last night. I have today off, so I'll probably work on it a bit more. I must say, there are some issues already. This is definitely going to be a challenge. No matter how hard I try, I can not get Martha's arms to stick right. The glue just doesn't want to hold. Maybe it's because of the difference in plastics. Also, painting this kit will be a lot harder than I imagined. The paints provided are very different from the ones I am familiar with. The colors are pretty accurate, but I'll probably end up mixing a lot of my own. It's tough to see exactly how the TARDIS console should be painted. I know, I should know that, but it's a bit confusing. One great thing about this kit is there is no need to spray the kit with a primer before painting. The paint goes on very well. Sorry for rambling on, I just wanted to share my thoughts.

Maybe if u lightly sand areas before gluing?isnt there bondo?i use superglue gel from dollar general for my custom superheroes which work great!maybe insert small metal pin in one end and drill teeny hole in other to make more secure?that what id do as long as not fragile material.love to see pics.where did u get?Man lotta work but be worth it!now hurry so i can see!ha ha just kidding

I just recieved my kit also...Oh it will take me a while but it will be a labor of love. I figured out a way to do the doc's pinstripes.
There is a graphics tape by formaline that I have at work. It comes in different widths as thin as .16". It bends and is tricky to put on but it does come in electric blue. Once I lay down the tape after I paint the pant legs...I will seal it with clear coat. I do not know if they still make it but Iam sure they make something similar if you check an art store.

I will ask the guys at work what glue will work for Martha's arms.
I work at a toy design studio and we have model makers. Ha lucky me.

Micromark sells stuff u brush on what u dont want painted then u simply peel off!easy!tighter than tape.

yes evil- it has an illuminated lantern and tardis sfx.

timlord...great advice...micromark sounds like would work alot better to paint dt's trouser stripes.

Thats not the name of product but the online shop cant remember name!they have awsome paint that just for miniatures its not thick and lumpy its thinner!they also have this stuff u pour to make waterfalls!and kits to cast molds etc..they send out catalogs too!ive seen folks cast model kits sn they can remake or have doubles!be good to glue arm then recast as one solid part just a idea!

I deal with micromark all the time. They have tons of great stuff.

As far as updates, it's slow going. With my job and other comissioned art pieces, I don't have much time to work on the kit. I have run into a bunch of problems with pieces not fitting together like they should. I have also realized that the photos of the finished kit on the box could not have been done using only the paints and brushes included. I have painted a lot of miniatures and models. Painting and sculpting is what I do, and this is still an incredibly complicated kit. I haven't even started building the TARDIS yet. And the wood frames on the TARDIS windows are going to be a real pain also. But it's a fun kind of pain.

Yes alot of work into models and customs.i stopped doing models years ago when id get pieces missing and parts couldnt piece together.but for the cost of that doctor who model they should be higher quality!sound like great winter sunday afternoon project!

Here is all I have so far. mostly base coats. I've started detailing Martha's clothing. The Doctor's pinstripes are drawn temporarily with colored pencil. I'll paint them later. Not sure how to paint the TARDIS console. I guess the main part stays clear with silver knobs and junk. I'll have to do some research.

How do the electronics compare to the flight control TARDIS? Are they complicated to install?

The electronics are located in the top portion of the TARDIS. There is no installation necessary. The light is very bright and the sound is clear, but it only goes on for about five seconds. It is activated by a little slide lever when the door is pushed open. It takes three AAA betteries. Or maybe just two, I can't remember at the moment. The scale is very close to the figures and playset. Maybe an inch taller.
