 | Subject: 5 inch DALEK Repaint. Sat Jul 28, 2007 4:37 pm | |
| So, I'm in the process of aquiring a 5 inch DALEK army for repainting purposes. I just tried to dismantle a mutant reveal, and found that there are some hidden screws under some of the skirt balls. Now, even if I manage to pry off the skirt balls and take the screws out, I still don't know what new problems I might encounter once I get the mutant out and see what's underneath. I would idealy like to get the dome off, just to facilitate easier painting of the neck. I very much doubt it is a friction fit, and I'm not planning on getting a screwdriver in there trying to pry it off only to find out it isn't friction fit, and ending up with a headless DALEK. So, what I'm getting at is, has anyone taken these five inch DALEKS apart, and if so, do you have any tips? I'm waiting for the 12 Inch Character Options Non-Remote control DALEK to come out, so I can paint larger ones. But, until then, the 5 inch are my targets for repainting. Plus, they are cheap and readily available. I will post my repaints as I do them. But for now, I'm just in the planning stage. |

| Well. I have fnished painting my first DALEK. It was not fun. There are a few issues I have to get my head around as far as detail work is concerned. First, the vents in between the neck slats. I'm going to have to figure out a way of masking these off so that I'm not trying to stick a paintbrush in there with my shaky hand. I dont know what to do...I'm going to try several methods. Second are the skirt balls. Holy #*%@ those are NOT fun to paint. I AM going to make a masking template out of acitate or something so I NEVER have to paint those things freehand again. All in all I suppose it'll look okay for a first try. It's no worse than those DAPOL Dalek paintjobs I've seen. On extreme close scrutiny it is rough, but from five feet away it'll be fine. I'll get better as I go on. At ten bucks a pop for DALEKS it's not like I'm losing much by screwing a few up in the beginning. I plan to use my airbrush next time, as this'll make some of it easier, and it will leave more detail to paint. I'll put the wee beggar back together on Monday and post a pic then. |

| Yeah, well, here are the pics. I have learned some valuable lessons painting this little bugger. One is: WAIT UNTIL THE PAINT CURES BEFORE PUTTING THE THING BACK TOGETHER!!!!!!!! I don't care if this takes a week, I will be patient next time. I'm also gonna do a little research into painting techniques so I'm not winging it for the most part. The next ones will be better, and that is a promise, but this one will look okay sitting on a high shelf with the other ones.

Look real close and you'll see my bloody fingerprints all over the thing...Well, maybe I'm being a little extreme and picky. |

| OR if you have the Battle Pack Dalek, just do some touch-ups on that one. Hmmmm.... _________________ http://reverend-amagon-blog.tripod.com/doctorwho www.myspace.com/amagon http://groups.google.com/group/Guardians_of_Gallifrey |

| when i look at my White Dalek repaint I am so unhappy with the shoddy quality of my workmanship. I am in the process of doing some repaints on more daleks which will blow my last one away. I want to be able to look at it and be satisfied, and not see my bloody fingerprints in the paint (look close at the photos, you'll see them too). When I am done I will post the pics, but I can assure you, they will be sweet. I will first be working on some "classic" repaints, but after I finish with those four, I'm gonna try out some "New" paint confugurations. The key is to be patient. Waiting for the paint not only to dry, but to cure is a lesson in patience let me tell you. I just want to grab the thing and keep working on it, but I can't. What is cool is that the "mutant reveal" Daleks are down to like 8 bucks now, so even if I bought ten of them I'm still not out that much dosh. Anyway, blah blah blah...I could rant about this forever... |

| | Share some tips with us. What type of paint works well for repainting the toy Dalek? Standard enamel paint like on plastic model kits? Acrylic enamels? |

| | One paint I thought was always good and it is nice if you spray paint base coats is Testors Model Master. It is a little more expensive but worth it. |
