312: The Sound of Drums

Quick reminder to EVERYONE that has managed to get a copy, see an original airing or found some way to watch any season 3 eps BEFORE they air on SciFi...be very careful in your comments not to spoil anything for those just seeing them.*

*Yes that included me, hard not to mix up some events, especially in the last two eps.

HERE COME THE DRUMS, HERE COME THE DRUMS!!!

Okay that part was hokey, but this episode was well paced in it's build to next week's finale. All the right elements of impossible situation for the Doctor to be up against and lots of question of how will it all end. I didn't really like the whole backstory of the Master being driven insane by the vortex, but since that was what was written, I think John Simm played the character to the hilt.

The only thing that may have been a hit or miss thing to me was the explanation for the Master being brought out of the the 8th Doctor's Tardisfrom the tv movie. The idea that the time lords had simply brought him out to assist them, and never told the Doctor certainly seemed right in line with the classic series' time lords. May not have worked for everyone but was fine for me.

Yes, resurrecting in the most duplicitous evil Timelord to fight Daleks couldn't possibly backfire.
I love the new Master's sense of humor; he's almost Joker-like. Plus he shares a love of Teletubbies with me.
The episode was lopsided so everything that didn't invole Harry or Lucy was kind of meh.
The Toclfane are like cuter more effective Daleks.
The Galifrey flashback should've been more impressive.
The Master turned the TARDIS into a jukebox?!
What's that song that played at the end? It was both horrible and amazing at the same time.

Well I thought all was explained rather tidy with enough vagueness to make it all plausible. New Master is just wicked awesome! Is it me or is the sound of the drums actually a snipet out of the theme song(old). To me this ep was 99.9% perfect, The .1% minus is do to the fact that standard management practices show that you always need room for improvement. That being stated here is my nit-pickery: FOR CRYING OUT LOUD AN HONEST TO GOD BUNDLE OF DYNAMITE TICKING AWAY ON THE TV!?! IT was even clearly marked "dynamite"! That was just silly, and before anyone stated it I'm rationalizing it with the fact that it goes with the masters new personality.

Darth Moose has that one and the one from Last of the Timelords on his myspace site.

I think the whole DYNAMITE thing was a part of his OTT sense of humor in his new body. I laughed my bum off when I saw it.

Not to mention the world we live in now. Remember the British had their own tragedy in the underground.

So, perhaps the Dynamite gag also served to show it in a 'fantasy' context of the old Warner Brothers cartoons to the kids. Rather than a lump of C-4, it maybe wouldnt get the kids in Britain, the target audience to not connect right away to the reality of our lives now. Not soap boxing, just acknowledging the responsibility we have to the younger fans.

Yes I agree there are a variety of sound reasons for the depiction, and as stated since I really liked the rest of the episode I was just nit-picking for fun.

The Master had me laughing at his enjoyment of his own bad self. Yeah, the character is kind of like The Joker.

(A pox on Sci-Fi for the editing, though. I know they have to do it, but it's just something that irks me to no end. If ya can BT these episodes, by all means do.)
Having already seen the Season Finale, all I'm saying is this:
Squeeeee!

I would like to know how they will be presented on the DVD.. I already read that they were given special time allowance for the finale broadcast in England. I hope it is the originals, but I will wait until someone gets it who has seen in the original broadcast to confirm before I buy it.

My understanding is that the DVD will have the complete episodes - no cuts - as has been the case with the previous two seasons.
